The main difference in their capability is that VoIP can be used for one to one phone call and has an inherent ability to route telephone calls, which SIP Trunking cannot do.
SIP Trunking
is a virtual private network (VPN) service that allows you to connect two or
more networks together and exchange data and voice traffic across it. To
achieve this, you require a toll bypass service like SIP Trunking.
Like we said
above, the IP in VoIP stands for Internet Protocol. It's a method of sending
voice information across the internet, along with other data like email and
files, using telephone-like devices called IP phones. All SIP Trunking
providers offer you an alternative to traditional telephones (or POTS).
SIP Trunking vs VoIP
In the
simplest of terms, IP/VoIP call terminations is a service that allows you to
make and receive telephone calls using a traditional telephone equipped with a
built-in adapter connecting the telephone to your computer. With this
configuration, all of the processing of the call occurs on your endpoint device
(computer).
In SIP Trunking,
instead of routing voice information through your computer, your VoIP provider
will route your calls to another phone number using their VoIP gateway. Calls
made with either service are free between users of the same service.
VoIP can be
used on any device that has an internet connection, but SIP Trunking requires
you to have a way to input DTMF tones (touch tone dialing) on your
telephone/device.
SIP Trunking
is sometimes referred to as internet call termination (ICL), internet
telephony, voice over IP (VoIP) or VoIP terminating.
Is SIP Trunking is Similar to VoIP?
SIP Trunks Provision
Voice over Internet Protocol traffic from a carrier to your Ortel IPBX system.
SIP Trunks carry the same voice information as any other trunk you would use
for a telephone conversation between two parties.
SIP Trunks
can be delivered either through a cable or DSL broadband connection, T1/E1 on a
digital carrier, ISDN BRI interface, or a standard analog telephone line.
SIP Trunks
are just another trunk interface in your Ortel IPBX. The only difference is
they carry data instead of the traditional audio information that can be sent
across a POTS(Plain Old Telephone Service) circuit. These trunks work much like
any other interface in an IPBX system.
VoIP is like
a "block of ice" that you put into your glass and then pour the
beverage (analog telephone call) over the top and it melts away to nothing as
the beverages travel from one party to another.
Why are SIP trunks required for VoIP?
SIP Trunking
allows you to combine your Internet datacenter with your voice network and
provides you with a virtual PBX system, without the cost of purchasing and
maintaining all the required equipment yourself.
Moreover,
SIP Trunking offers many more features than regular POTS (Plain Old Telephone
Service) like Call forwarding, call waiting, conference calling etc.
VoIP does
not support PBX features that include Call forwarding, Call waiting, Caller ID,
Conference calling etc.
Why do businesses choose SIP Trunking?
SIP Trunking
is a cost effective solution for any business looking to save on costs of
maintaining an in-house PBX system or basically looking to reduce their monthly
bills from the existing carrier. You can start making savings within the first
few months of switching to SIP Trunking.
You can easily
add or remove phone lines into your PBX system with just a click of button via
the web interface in your control panel. No need for expensive equipment, no
need for dedicated IT staff to maintain it. It's much more scalable than
traditional PBX systems.
SIP Trunking
solutions are ideal for medium to large business looking to add additional
lines/areas code, remove redundant PBX's from premise, etc.
In case of a
disaster in your datacenter or if you want to shift your data center
temporarily then with SIP Trunking services you can do that without any
downtime.
If you're
already using any VoIP solution and looking for ways to reduce your phone bill
then SIP Trunking is the best option since it can save you 40%-60% of your
current phone bill.
